Radiators & heating - survey feedback

Many responses to our survey last week mentioned that the Hall has been too hot since we turned the heating on in October.

We are mindful that before we turned the heating on, many residents were complaining that it was much too cold in the building. So we have to try and find a happy medium.

In response to your feedback in the survey, we have modified the times when the heating is turned on as follows:

Changed FROM
Changed TO:
Morning
06:00 to 10:00
06:30 to 09:00
Evening
15:30 to 23:00
16:30 to 23:00

If it's still too hot for you, remember you should be able to turn the radiator in your room off (turn the knob clockwise) and on (anticlockwise) to control the heat in your room. If your heat control does not work, log a request in the maintenance book at reception so we can take a look at it for you.

We had new boilers installed at Connaught Hall over the summer, so we think the greater efficiency of our boilers and higher pressure in the heating system is what is making the Hall so hot, despite the heating being on for less time than ever before.

We do rely on your feedback to get this right, so please email suggestions@connaught-hall.org.uk if there is a problem with the heating generally in the Hall.

Quick survey results

Thank you to everyone who answered our quick survey last week. 76 residents responded - so that's a response rate of 33%.

The results of the satisfaction scales are below.

We will carefully be going through all your written comments over the next week or so. Those of you who requested that we write back to you about your comments should expect to hear from us within 14 days - and probably much sooner.

We will update everyone with the action that we take based on your feedback in this survey.

Remember, you can always write to us with your ideas, suggestions, compliments, and complaints at suggestions@connaught-hall.org.uk.

Or if you want to write to us anonymously, you can text the Warden at 07 907 753 894. Please note this phone is not monitored 24/7, so do not use this number for emergencies. The response time is similar to our target email response time (72 hours). If you need to contact someone in an emergency, call reception and ask for the person on duty.

Democracy, feedback, and student involvement: the Facilities Committee, Multicultural Students' Forum, and Residents' Club Committee

Join the Connaught Hall Facilities Committee and/or Multicultural Students' Forum (McSF)!

Unlike the Residents' Club Committee, there are no elections to be a representative on the Facilities Committee or McSF.

Facilities Committee

We need six student reps on the committee. Members meet with hall staff and contractors to improve the facilities and services in hall, such as catering, cleaning, maintenance, and security.

Email facilities.committee@connaught-hall.org.uk ASAP with your name and room number to join.

Visit http://www.connaught-hall.org.uk/pages/facilities/facilitiescommittee.html for more information. If more than six residents apply, we will choose six names randomly.

Multicultural Students' Forum
We need student representatives from any and all cultures, religions, countries, and backgrounds to act as advisors to the Warden, Residents' Club, and Hall Management on matters of interest to international, overseas, and ethnic minority students. Everyone is welcome (including white British "home" students): all that's needed is that you share the ideals of the McSF.
Follow this link for more information: http://www.connaught-hall.org.uk/pages/community/mcsf.html
You can join the McSF mailing list at the link above. If you are on the mailing list, you will be invited to meetings of the McSF three times a year. Our first meeting will be in October, so make sure you sign up ASAP!

Residents' Club Committee
Remember there will be elections for five Officers of the Residents' Club Committee on Tuesday 8th October. For more information, and to stand for election, visit http://www.connaught-hall.org.uk/pages/community/clubelections.html.

Nominations close at midday on Saturday 5th October.

Facilities Committee

Applications are invited for eight student representatives on the Hall Facilities Committee.

As a student representative, you will meet with Hall staff and members of the elected Residents’ Club Committee to help make decisions about:

  • fire safety
  • housekeeping
  • first aid
  • security
  • catering
  • smoking policy
  • maintenance
  • health promotion
  • reception services
  • recycling & re-use

There are four meetings a year, each lasting around one hour – so it’s not a huge commitment, and it’s a good point to add to your CV!

If you want to join, send a note of your name, room number & email address to facilities.committee@connaught-hall.org.uk no later than 6pm on 26 November.

If more than eight residents apply, members will be chosen randomly from the applications received. The first meeting will be in early December.
